The top reason why there are plenty of dogs in animal shelters right now is the fact that most people aren’t ready to give a shelter pup a home. But if we think about it, we can do other things to help animal shelters and the dogs they support. For Jan Brown, also known as Knitty Jan, her hobby was the perfect gift.
Jan Brown loves to knit, and she decided to use her craft to help greyhounds in the animal shelters across the United Kingdom. She has always been fascinated with greyhounds and knew a lot about them. Jan knew that these majestic doggos have thin coats, so wintertime is a hard time for them.
Since she couldn’t give them homes, she decided to donate woolly clothing for them. Jan knitted them herself and we must say, the greyhounds looked dashing. Although Jan understands that dogs don’t really like wearing clothing, she knew that her knitted creations will help them at least during the winter.
Then she started knitting dog coats and sold them online. She donated part of the proceeds to dog shelters in the U.K. that are dedicated to rescuing greyhounds. Her project became so popular that Jan quitted her day job to focus on knitting! She even had a website where people could place their orders.
However, around a year later, she decided to stop selling knitted coats for some undisclosed reason. But despite her business closing down, Jan still continues to knit up to this day. But instead of selling them for charity, she donated them to shelter greyhounds around the world.
Jan’s creations even reached China! This kind-hearted knitter explained that she continues to do this because many of these greyhounds are yet to find their forever homes. But at least for now, they have something to keep them warm and cozy as they wait for that long-awaited day.
