If you haven’t shed a tear in quite a long time, prepare some tissue, as Louis the dog’s story may make you cry a little. Louis, a three-year-old mix of Labrador and German Shepherd, had been under the care of a shelter named Helen Woodward Animal Center.
But before Louis arrived at the shelter, his owners chose to have his eyes taken out instead of treating his serious eye infection. The same owners also decided to surrender the dog to the shelter because they found it hard to take care of a blind dog.
Louis had other problems
Louis’ story revealed other issues that might have been plaguing him for quite some time. His medical checks showed that he had a broken leg that was not duly treated. This problem had been dealt with already, but such conditions revealed that his former life has been filled with neglect and mistreatment.
The animal center had received hundreds of calls and emails from concerned citizens. Their messages were filled with heartbreak and anger, and some of them even questioned the prosecution of Louis’ former owners.
A big light of hope for Louis
While Louis’ story was heartbreaking, there was still a silver lining to it. Now, he’s safe and is even inspiring many animal lovers to be of great help to shelter pets.
According to the shelter, animal lovers around the world have been getting in touch with them to donate, fill out adoption applications, and even offer helpful services. Helen Woodward has been able to raise close to $12,000 in donations – in just one day!
Some have offered to sponsor his adoption or food. And because Louis is blind, some offer to sponsor bumper collars and sonar collars. An organization from South Carolina named The Beloved Foundation has offered to cover a portion of the blind dog’s aftercare.
The organization has received help from places as far away as Indiana, Washington D.C., New York, Kentucky, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Spain, Panama, Chile, Canada, and The Netherlands.
