Angela Adan, a dog rescuer for Marley’s Mutt Dog Rescue, got a call for help for a tiny Chihuahua mix found under a car. She did not hesitate and heeded the call for help.
Driving for four hours, the tiny dog was turned over to her wrapped in a blanket. Angela has had her fair share of stray sob stories but this one would hit home a little bit harder.
It was only when Angela arrived home with her rescue did she realize the extent of the dog’s ailments. When Angela unwrapped him from the blanket, she found that she was awfully malnourished, his two front legs broken and splayed on both sides apart from the severe deformation of her teeth. She named her Freddie Mercury.
Angela could only imagine what Freddie has been through. Freddie may have never experienced how it was to be cared for, much more to be loved. Angela knew she had to keep herself from crying, she had to stay strong for Freddie, show her that everything will be alright.
While she was petting the dog to comfort him, Freddie licked her face – he knew that he’s safe and protected; at that moment Angela knew that Freddie is not a foster dog; Freddie will be part of her family.
Little by little Freddie regained strength and thrived in Angela’s family of 6 rescues, most of which are dogs with special needs. She has now learned to move around with her hind legs “just like a T-Rex” Angela quips.
Freddie’s condition will have an effect on her life expectancy, but Angela considers it as a gift, something that she is grateful for. Dogs live for the moment and she will be ready to give Freddie the best moments of her life. Caring for special needs dogs taught her to enjoy this time right here, right now, and to not really worry about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow.
Angela believes that all dogs deserve love and happiness, surely Freddie now knows what both means.
