When Cora was found by a Good Samaritan, the nine-month-old German Shephard was abandoned in a tied-up garbage bag and left for dead. It was clear that she also needed immediate medical care, so they rushed her to the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) animal hospital in Tampa, Florida.
There, the medical staff discovered that Cora only weighed 22 pounds, making her look like she was only skin and bones. In fact, she was severely malnourished that she found it difficult to lift her head. On top of that, the pup was suffering from a severe case of anemia, so the staff was unsure whether she would even survive the treatment.
However, VEG veterinarian Dr. Lisa Soyka didn’t want to give up on Cora that easily. She knew that the pup had a fighting spirit inside her fragile body, so she decided to push through with the treatment. She started the emaciated German Shepherd on IV fluids, antibiotics, and deworming medication.
Cora also received blood transfusions to treat her anemia and give her back her strength. After a few days of dedicated love and care, the nine-month-old pup’s health began improving, and she started perking up and showing off her friendly and energetic personality.
When she finally hit a weight of 45 pounds, the hospital deemed her healthy enough to get released and move into her foster home in Riverview, Florida. Animal Luvr’s Dream Rescue, a charity organization based in Hillsborough County, also set up water therapy sessions to help Cora recover her muscle strength.
Once she gains enough strength and energy, the charity will start accepting applications for her adoption. But until then, the German Shepherd will stay with her foster family and get used to the life she truly deserves. Look at the now healthy and happy Cora here.
