Violet was more than two years old when a woman saw her chained to a makeshift shelter. With just one quick look, the woman could tell that the dog was neglected and most likely abandoned. The chained dog was dirty and looked like no one was taking care of her.
Saddened by the dog’s plight, the lady called the NMDOG and asked them to rescue the poor pup. The NMDOG is a non-profit organization based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They specialize in rescuing and sheltering dogs that are chained, abused, and abandoned.
Chained for a long time
When the NMDOG rescue team arrived at the location, they saw Violet and it was obvious that she has been attached to the chain for a long time, most likely all her life. She didn’t have much fur growth around her neck where the heavy chain rubbed against her. The skin area was even stained black.
They asked around for the dog’s owner and discovered that he was in jail for an unrelated reason. For quite some time now, nobody was able to provide care for Violet. They explained to the people that it was illegal to keep dogs chained when their owners are not present. So they freed Violet and took her with them.
The first thing the rescuers did was bring the poor pup to a vet. After a thorough examination, they learned that Violet’s skin was badly sunburned. She also had a severe case of flystrike. This is a condition where maggots devour an animal’s skin.
Amazingly, she had no other health issues. But she did have a great fear of humans. She retreats and cowers every time someone talks too loud or moves too fast.
But slowly, with lots of attention and patience from the clinic staff, Violet is getting over her fear. She has learned to trust humans and how to become a puppy. She has gotten some toys and has started running and jumping around.
When she has fully recovered, physically and mentally, she will be put up for adoption. Hopefully, she finds a home that will love her and treat her like family.
