For many people exercising is very important and that includes exercise for their pets as well. During this COVID-era staying active has become a major priority for a lot of dog parents.
A January 2021 survey of 2,000 dog owners in the US by CivicScience, reported that 54% of dog owners felt they were less active in 2020 than they expected, and 80% expressed that they want to be more active in 2021. 70% blamed the pandemic for their lack of physical activity.
On a positive note, for a lot of dog parents having a dog has been a very good fitness motivator.
The survey also reported that 65% of dog owners are more active with a dog than without one, and more than half (57%) are more likely to exercise with their dog. 43% indicated that their dog is their accountability partner. 75% said that being active with their pup greatly improves their bond!
What is the right amount of exercise for your dog? Dr. Gary Richter, a veterinary health expert on Rover’s Dog People Panel, recommends at least 30-45 minutes per day, though he says energy levels can vary from dog to dog. For instance, a Jack Russell Terrier might need to run for hours, whereas a Shih Tzu may be content with 30 minutes. Dr. Gary also says many dogs will let their owners know how much exercise they need.
